I saw this on food t.v. this morning and was inspired by it. I used smokies instead of hot dogs. Mine came from a local butcher and are antibiotic, hormone and chemical feed additives free. I was making Caprese salad with fresh tomatoes from the farmer's market and thought this would be a great accompaniment with it.
- 4 Smokies
- 2 premade puff pastry sheet(s), thawed and cut in halves to fit smokies
- "Everything Bagel" seasoning, as needed
- Egg wash (1 egg and a bit of water, whisked together)
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. For the smokies: Use a paring knife to cut some incisions in them. Whisk the egg with a splash of cold water in a small bowl for the egg wash.
Make the blankets and roll: Place one of the puff pastry sheets on surface. Roll each smokie so it’s fully wrapped in a single piece of the pastry and use some of the egg wash to seal the edge shut. Pinch the two edges to firmly close and trim off if needed.
Roll in "everything bagel" spice: Place the everything spice into a dish that fits smokie length. Brush each pig in a blanket with egg wash on all sides and roll each log in the spice mix, pressing gently so the spices stick and slightly embed themselves in the pastry. Place each wrapped piece on the baking sheet, seam-side down, with an inch or two in between each for even browning. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set. Yes, I'm aware that mine looked like bananas, haha. 🍌
Place the baking sheet in the center of the oven and bake until the pastry is nicely golden brown. Mine took 60 minutes so just start checking at 30 and watch. Serve with the sauce on the side. I used BBQ for my son and honey mustard for myself.
This recipe was stupid easy. It took about 10 minutes to prep. The end result was "meh" and maybe "ugh". I would never make this again. I used pre-made bagel seasoning and it was soooo salty it was gross. I would suggest making your own seasoning like in the recipe to save the salt lick this was. The pastry flaked everywhere and was a huge mess and made it hard to eat. This one gets filed under "never again"... Thank goodness for the summer tomato Caprese salad, that saved dinner!
